This public artwork forms the four sliding panels surrounding an above-ground pump station on Capstan Way. The work is titled “Site Unseen,” as a whimsical reference to the mechanical networks and conduits that lie hidden beneath our streets and behind the walls of buildings. In my work I often call attention to the remarkable visual similarities between living networks found in nature, and the designed networks built into cities. Just as leaf veins are networks for transporting the lifeblood of a plant, one can imagine streets, power, water, drainage and communication systems as networks transporting the lifeblood of a city. “Site Unseen” is a visual representation of this connection. While literally concealing the pump station, the work juxtaposes images of leaf veins with images of street maps of the Richmond neighbourhood where it is installed.
